Mokra Gora

Mokra Gora is a settlement in the farthest western part of the Užice borough, on the slopes of the mountains Tara and Zlatibor. It is only 40 km remote from the hotel Zlatiborska Noć. Thanks to it’s natural beauty,  lush vegetation , thick conifer forests and rivers, Mokra Gora got it’s first inhabitants very early. Importants roads connecting Serbia and Bosnia have been passing through Mokra Gora since the earliest days, and the famous „Šargan’s 8“, the most attractive touristic-exhibit narrow gauge railway in Europe, was built in 1925. It was designed to overcome the altitude variance of 300 meters (between Mokra Gora and Šargan) with the famous „eight“ – 13,5 kilometer long loop constructed in the shape of number 8. The old train „Ćira“ had made it’s final pass through the „eight“ loop back in 1974, whereas in 1999. the railway got reconstructed for touristic purposes, and all authentic platform facilities and original carriages have remained in shape to the present day.

Even the famous film director Emir Kusturica couldn’t resist the charms of Mokra Gora. After he had shot one of his movies, „Life Is a Miracle“, on the terrains of Mokra Gora, he decided to build his „Drvengrad“  („Wooden town“) on the hill Mećavnik. When visiting Wooden town, we are entering an authentic rural settlement of the area from the 19. century, which has it’s own church. You can buy unique items in authentic stores, visit an art gallery where artist from all around the world set their exhibitions, or an ethnographic museum. There are also a restaurant with national dishes and a cinema equipped with the latest technology.
